Moisture inside the insulation creates a damp environment where mold can develop, so mold growth is a direct indicator that moisture has affected the insulation. When insulation gets damp, its ability to resist heat is compromised and it can deteriorate, making energy losses and potential health risks more likely. The other clues can appear with moisture but aren’t as definitive: musty odors can come from damp conditions in various parts of a structure, dry, intact insulation shows no sign of moisture, and ice damming points to roof/venting issues that may involve heat loss but aren’t conclusive proof of moisture within the insulation itself.
